Perfect for pollinators

Yellow Flag Iris- iris pseudaconus is a wetland plant that only grows in very wet soils at the margins of ponds, lakes, water meadows and damp ditches where it attracts a variety of insects including bees, dragonflies and ladybirds. In gardens it can easily be included at the edge of a pond or bog garden and will always grow best where there is some sunlight. Yellow Flag Iris has long pointed leaves that resemble swords, and spectacular yellow flowers from May to July. These are followed by unusual seed heads and seeds that provide autumn interest. Yellow Flag Iris looks best growing with other wetland plants such as Cuckooflower, and Ragged Robin. Alternative names for Yellow Flag Iris include Jacob’s sword, Wild Iris, Yellow iris, Segg and Yellow Flags

How to grow Yellow Flag Iris from seeds:
Yellow Flag Iris seeds should be sown directly outside or in trays of compost in autumn. Any trays should be left outside over winter in a cold frame or covered with a sheet of glass. The compost should be kept very moist. Germination will normally occur the following spring after winter chilling. The seedlings can then be pricked out and grown on, for planting out later in the year. Once established, Yellow Flag Iris plants will spread by means of an underground rhizome given the right conditions. An alternative technique for sowing water margins, is to simply scatter a few seeds into pond or lake water, and let nature take its course. However this would not normally be as reliable as the above methods.

RHS Perfect for Pollinators.
The RHS Perfect for Pollinators mark is only given to plants that support pollinating insects in gardens. Bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and many others visit flowers to feed on nectar and pollen; while doing so they transfer pollen and increase seed set and fruit development.
