Welsh Poppy– meconopsis cumbrica has bright yellow flowers and very attractive almost fern like foliage. It is one of a very small number of wildflowers that will grow well on dry, poor soils where there is very little light. As such Welsh poppy plants can be used to great effect to brighten up areas otherwise dull and quite unattractive. It will also grow well on old walls and in rock gardens and Welsh poppy seeds will often find a niche within small cracks in pavings. The seed capsules of Welsh poppy are quick to develop and will hold a large quantity of distinctive dark black seeds which are retained for a long period and can easily be collected in a paper bag. Plants will then go completely dormant over winter, shedding all their foliage but the bright green leaves are quick to reappear in the spring followed by a mass of yellow flowers which look stunning in spring sunshine especially when being blown around in a gentle breeze. For stunning colour combinations, Welsh poppies can be grown with red Corn poppies or combined with other more unusual varieties such as Long-headed or Prickly poppies. How to grow Welsh Poppy Seeds Welsh Poppy seeds are best sown in the autumn directly where they are to flower but can also be sown in compost trays in the spring. The seedlings can then be pricked out and grown on, for planting out later in the year. Once established Welsh poppies will self-seed quite readily given the right conditions.
