Wild Pansy -viola tricolor– is most commonly found on arable or open ground. In gardens it is adaptable to different soils and looks best grown in a gravel rockery or at the edge of a flower border. It is slightly larger and more colourful than the closely related field pansy yet smaller, but just as beautiful as the more familiar garden pansies. In the wild, plants can attract the Queen of Spain fritillary, as a breeding butterfly, which will lay its eggs on the plant. Wild Pansy is a low growing species, whose face-like flowers appear in various combinations of cream, yellow and purple. It has a long flowering season typically from April to September but can last longer, sometimes even to November ! Plants look best alongside other low growing wild flowers such as Meadow Saxifrage, Common Centaury, Sheep’s bit scabious and Common Rock rose. An alternative name for Wild Pansy is Heart’s ease.

How to grow Wild Pansy Seeds
Wild Pansy seeds should be sown in the spring or autumn, outside, where they are to flower, and covered very lightly with soil. Wild Pansy should self-seed readily once established.
